Southern Section Baseball : Hart Homers Highlight Murray Milestone

The Hart High baseball team gave Coach Bud Murray an appropriate gift for his 300th career victory Tuesday, smashing three home runs in a 15-4 Foothill League win at Schurr.

Hart’s Robby Davis started the onslaught with a two-run shot to left in the first inning. David Toledo also homered in the inning, a three-run blast to left that capped a six-run rally. In the fifth, Casey Burrill hit his sixth home run, a 400-foot, three-run shot to left.

Keith Halcovich (8-2) allowed one earned run, struck out two and walked two in five innings as Hart (19-5, 10-4 in league play) defeated Schurr for the sixth time in a row.

The victory gives Murray, in his third season at Hart, a 17-year record of 300-120.

In another Foothill game:

Burroughs 6, Burbank 1--Senior right-hander Chris Westbury threw a four-hitter, struck out 11, walked one and allowed no earned runs at Burroughs.

Burroughs (14-10, 8-6) turned four walks and a single into a 4-0 lead in the second inning.

GOLDEN LEAGUE

Saugus 12, Quartz Hill 1--Matt Tull was two for four with three runs batted in and set a school record with his 13th double as Saugus clinched the league title at Quartz Hill.

Roger Salkeld, J. B. Johnson and Tull all homered for Saugus (18-4-2, 12-2). Scott Warr (6-2) struck out five and walked two in six innings.

Canyon 12, Palmdale 3--Sean Nichols and Eric Rodriguez combined for a six-hitter and Jason Stanley had three hits and four RBIs to lead Canyon at Palmdale.

Nichols (5-3) gave up three hits and struck out six in four innings to pick up the win. Corey Byars doubled twice and scored three runs and Tim Rorick also doubled for Canyon (13-10, 10-4).

DEL REY LEAGUE

Alemany 14, St. John Bosco 6--Joey Rosselli (5-1) struck out 10, walked two and allowed one earned run at Alemany.

Mike Sims was four for four for Alemany (16-12, 9-3), and Tom Daniels was three for four with four RBIs. Jon Beauchemin hit his seventh home run and scored four runs.

Teammate John Lite homered and drove in four runs.

St. Francis 6, Crespi 0--John Dempsey broke up Mark Loretta’s no-hit bid with a leadoff single in the seventh at Valley College.

Loretta (2-0), usually the St. Francis shortstop, has yet to allow an earned run in 12 innings this season. He gave up two hits in five innings of relief before Tuesday’s one-hitter, in which he struck out three and walked four against Crespi (9-16-1, 1-9-1).

Mike Jones had three hits for St. Francis (11-7-1, 6-5).

FRONTIER LEAGUE

Agoura 9, Nordhoff 0--Bob Kazmirski pitched a four-hitter and had two hits--including a leadoff home run in the fourth--as the host Chargers (13-7, 8-1) clinched at least a tie for the league title.

Kazmirski (7-1) struck out six and walked three. Teammates Nelson Townes, Brian Smith and Zac Miller each had two hits.

ALPHA LEAGUE

Montclair Prep 6, Village Christian 5--Keyaan Cook singled in the tying and go-ahead runs in the sixth for host Montclair Prep.

With two out in the sixth, Leland Sparks walked, Chad Calabria singled and Shad Knighton was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Cook singled home Sparks and Calabria for his seventh game-winning hit.

Western Christian 6, L.A. Baptist 5--Dave Garcia hit two home runs and Stoney Pelletier added a three-run homer for the host Knights. Dave Ophus and Shane Wight combined for an eight-hitter for L.A. Baptist (14-6, 4-5).

PACIFIC LEAGUE

Arcadia 6, Hoover 0--Hoover (12-8, 7-7) left the bases loaded in the first and seventh innings and stranded 11 runners in the game at Hoover.

David Berkey and George Trejo each had two hits for Hoover.

WESTSIDE LEAGUE

Highland Hall 3, Newbridge 2--Jakob Jensen came on with two on and none out in the seventh at Newbridge to pick up a save.

LIBERTY LEAGUE

Queen of Angels 7, Windward 1--Danny Herold threw a four-hitter for Queen of Angels, which clinched a playoff berth.

HERITAGE LEAGUE

L.A. Lutheran 8, Coast Christian 6--Travis Canel and Darren Brown knocked in runs in a three-run sixth as L. A. Lutheran rallied from a 6-5 deficit at home.

NONLEAGUE

Claremont 12, Grace Community 10--Chad Hankinson had two hits for host Grace Community.
