The six newest members of the Loyola Marymount University athletic hall of fame will be inducted Friday at St. Robert’s Auditorium on the Loyola campus.

This year the school honored four athletes, a coach and an administrator: Hugh Boyle, Harry (Bud) Brubaker, Harold (Skip) Giancanelli, the Rev. Donald Merrifield, Jerry Neri and James Tunney. Their addition brings the hall membership to 54.

Boyle, class of 1942, played baseball and basketball and has been a member of the school’s Athletic Board of Control for three decades. Former USC baseball Coach Rod Dedeaux, the winningest coach in NCAA history, named Boyle to his all-opponent team.

Brubaker, class of 1932, lettered in football and basketball four seasons each and was an honorable mention All-American in football in 1931, when he recorded a 108-yard punt. He later played professional football and coached at Dorsey and Westchester high schools.

Giancanelli, class of 1951, was a standout halfback for Loyola’s football teams from 1947 through 1950, then continued on to a pro career with the Philadelphia Eagles and the Hamilton Tiger Cats of the Canadian Football League. He went on to coach football at Lincoln High School and El Camino College.

Tunney, a posthumous selection, lettered in football, basketball and baseball in the 1920s and played in the college all-star football game in 1929. He later became vice president of Fremont High School and was a referee in both Pacific Coast League football and the National Football League.

Neri was an assistant football coach from 1949 to 1952 and was one of the most popular coaches in Loyola’s football history. He later served as assistant coach at Yale and with the Washington Redskins, and from 1963 to 1983 was a scout and personnel director for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Father Merrifield, Loyola’s president from 1969 to 1984 and the university’s chancellor since, oversaw the construction of Loyola’s two major athletic facilities--Albert Gersten Pavilion and George Page Stadium.
