Southern Section Baseball Playoffs : Gardocki Hits for the Cycle as Hart Batters La Salle in 19-Run Victory

Hart High first baseman Ray Gardocki hit for the cycle and the Indians recorded a season-high for runs scored in a 23-4 win over La Salle in a first-round Southern Section 4-A Division playoff game at Hart Friday.

Gardocki, a senior, twice had two hits in an inning to pace Hart’s 21-hit attack.

Gardocki, who was five for six and drove in three runs, had singles in the second and sixth innings, a double and triple in the third and a home run in the second.

Hart (20-6), the Foothill League co-champion, scored four runs in the first, nine runs in the second and seven in the third.

Robby Davis hit a three-run home run in the third for the Indians; teammate Lance Migita had a single, double and triple and scored four runs; David Toledo had two doubles and Casey Burrill was two for three.

Hart will play Walnut in a second-round game Tuesday.

5-A DIVISION

Newbury Park 11, North Torrance 0--Jeremy Dewey (8-2) held the Saxons to two hits, struck out four and posted the Panthers’ first shutout of the season at Newbury Park. It was Dewey’s eighth complete game.

Newbury Park (19-4-3), the second-place team from the Marmonte League, scored one run in the third, five in the fourth and five in the fifth. Geoff Black, who increased his RBI total to 33 with four in the game, had three on a bases-loaded double in the fourth.

Ron Spaeth drove in two more runs with a double in the fifth. Shortstop Eric Greene added two hits for the Panthers.

Newbury Park will play Fontana, a 4-3 winner over Westminster, on Tuesday.

Hawthorne 4, Alemany 1--The Del Rey League champion committed three errors and allowed three unearned runs in the loss at home.

Alemany left-hander Joey Rosselli (5-2) allowed six hits, struck out six and walked four. Hawthorne scored three runs in the second, one on a leadoff home run and two more after errors by Rosselli and John Lite.

Lite homered in the fourth for Alemany’s run. Senior catcher Mike Sims was two for two for the Indians (15-12).

Lakewood 6, Crescenta Valley 4--The Falcons held a 4-2 lead over top-seeded Lakewood (25-3) after 4 1/2 innings but allowed four runs in the fifth at Lakewood.

Crescenta Valley scored once in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead and had runners on second and third, but pitcher Scott Gleason (6-3) lined out to right to end the threat.

Center fielder Victor Ramirez was three for four, Gleason was two for four with a double and an RBI and Dan Sanchez drove in a run for Crescenta Valley (13-13).

4-A DIVISION

Notre Dame 5, San Luis Obispo 4--Greg Andrachick scored on Chris Lohman’s shallow sacrifice fly in the seventh to cap host Notre Dame’s come-from-behind win.

Trailing, 4-2, the Knights (24-5) scored three runs in the seventh. Bruno Paniccia began the rally with a pinch-hit double and went to third on Chris Prince’s single. Steve Martinez followed with a two-run double to tie the score.

After Kevin Crosby (two for two with a double) was intentionally walked, Chad Ratliff moved the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt and Lohman followed with the fly ball.

The Knights fell behind, 4-0, but narrowed the deficit in the fourth on Vinnie Orlando’s two-run homer.

Notre Dame will meet Foothill in the second round Tuesday.

Lompoc 3, Chaminade 2--Catcher Justin Stark hit a home run but Chaminade fell at Lompoc.

Lompoc scored two runs in the second and one in the third off freshman left-hander Ted Corcoran (2-3). Chaminade (11-14), which managed only six hits, scored twice in the fifth.

Santa Maria 6, Rio Mesa 0--Jessie Cardenas limited Rio Mesa to singles by Shea Freeman, Tom Deardorff and Adam Basua.

Jon Rust (9-3) pitched a complete game, allowing six hits and three earned runs in the loss.

3-A DIVISION

Canyon 10, El Monte 6--Jason Stanley reached base in the 10th on a dropped third strike that allowed Steve Mann to score and break a 6-6 tie at El Monte.

Rick Gombos followed with a single to drive in two of Canyons’ three insurance runs.

Canyon (14-11) scored five runs in the third when Corey Byars singled in a run and Rod Markovich and Mann each drove in two runs.

The Cowboys will play La Palma Kennedy on Tuesday.

2-A DIVISION

Morro Bay 6, Calabasas 2--Calabasas committed six errors and allowed five unearned runs at Morro Bay.

Scott Thayer scored on an error in the second and Dan Glassman doubled home Tom Hoover with two out in the third for Calabasas (11-9-1). Glassman (4-6) allowed five hits in the losing effort.

1-A DIVISION

Village Christian 7, Bishop 6--Craig Hudspeth walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to give the Crusaders the victory at The Master’s College.

Trailing, 6-5, Village Christian (17-7) struck for two runs in the seventh. Scott Danielson tripled with one out and scored on Mike Curl’s infield single before three consecutive walks ended the game.

Village Christian will play St. Bonaventure on Friday.

SMALL SCHOOLS DIVISION

Highland Hall 16, Cuyama Valley 15--Jakob Jensen hit a two-run double with one out in the bottom of the seventh to give the Hawks the win at Cal State Northridge.

Highland Hall (20-5) will play Mesrobian on Tuesday.

Camarillo Christian 15, Ribet Christian 8--Pete Runsten and Jon Giorgi each had three hits for Camarillo Christian (17-5).
