Southern Section Tennis Playoffs : Dana Hills Edges Newport Harbor

Dana Hills High School tied Newport Harbor, 9-9, in sets but earned a victory on games, 73-72, in a Southern Section 4-A quarterfinal tennis match Tuesday at Newport Harbor.

Ben Stevens won Dana Hills’ only set in singles, but the Dolphins rallied to take eight of nine doubles sets.

David Rotiti and Chris Stevens won 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1, Kurt Bruggeman and Troy Geisler won, 6-0, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 2 and Ryan Robinett and Tom Glattes took two of three, 6-1, 6-3, 3-6, at No. 3 doubles.

Dana Hills (17-3) plays top-seeded Santa Barbara in one semifinal Thursday. Third-seeded Corona del Mar plays fourth-seeded Beverly Hills in the other semifinal. Corona del Mar tied Camarillo, 9-9, but won on games, 92-88, also Tuesday.

In the 3-A quarterfinals:

Laguna Beach 12, La Quinta 6--Sophomore Jon Leach won 6-1, 6-0, 6-2, to improve to 54-0 for visiting Laguna Beach (19-3). Freshman Graham Gilles won, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0, also in singles for Laguna Beach, which plays Sunny Hills in the semifinal round Thursday.

In doubles, Lee Kirner and Aaron Brauer won, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2, for Laguna Beach. Kirner and Brauer defeated Peter Vu and Phu Truong, 6-3, to snap Vu and Truong’s 50-match winning streak this season.

Sunny Hills 13, Damien 5--Glenn Henderson swept, 6-2, 6-0, 6-2, as the Lancers (21-1) won seven of nine singles sets at Damien. Hans Erekelens and Ryan Henderson each won two of three sets in singles for Sunny Hills. James Choi and Brad Bosari swept, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6, for the Lancers.

Woodbridge 12, Burbank 6--Randy Ivey and Alex Stienhardt both swept as the Warriors (18-4) won seven of nine singles sets. Ivey won, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, and Stienhardt won, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0. The doubles team of Rajan Saggar and Brett Isaacman also swept, 6-4, 6-4, 6-1, for Woodbridge.

In the 1-A quarterfinals:

Pasadena Poly 18, Santa Margarita 0--Ryan McKee swept, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, for Pasadena Poly (20-0) at Coto de Caza. Santa Margarita finishes the season with an 11-4 record.
