Dorsey, Locke Capture City Championships at Track Finals

There were some surprises for Carson Coach Bill Mocnik in the City track and field finals Thursday at Birmingham High’s Tom Bradley Stadium.

But there were no first-place trophies for the Colts or their coach. Dorsey scored 66 points while Carson and Washington settled for second with 59 and Banning fifth with 26.

In the girls division, Locke won its second consecutive City championship with 102 points and Dorsey was second with 62.

As usual, the 1,600-meter relay decided the boys title. The team that won the relay would win the championship.

Carson led after the first leg, but by the time anchor Larry Billoups received the baton, the Colts were in fifth place.

Billoups got up to help Carson finish third in 3:20.75, but Dorsey’s first-place finish in 3:14.38 gave the Dons the championship.

“We scored more points than I thought we would,” Mocnik said. “Unfortunately, the other guys had good days, too.

“I knew it would come down to the 1,600, but I also knew for us to win it something would have had to happen. The other teams probably had to foul or something for us to win.”

Carson’s John Anthony recorded a personal best of 6-5 in the high jump to qualify for next weekend’s state finals at Cerritos College. Colts Billoups, Curtis Hawkins, Chris Roulier and Carlo Celosia also qualified.

Narbonne senior Jonathan DeVeaux was expected to contend in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and run anchor on the 400-meter relay team, but a pulled right hamstring suffered in last week’s City semifinals kept him out of the relay and 100, and he finished last in the 200.

“I felt terrible,” DeVeaux said. “I knew I’d have some pain but was hoping I could just run, get loose and keep going. But I was running as hard as I could and still wasn’t going.

“It was a nice race, though. I got a good look at it from behind.”

DeVeaux’s right leg cramped in last weekend’s semifinals when he finished second to Washington’s Donovan Burks.

Carson scored early with a pair of first-place finishers in the 110-meter high hurdles and 300-meter intermediate hurdles.

Hawkins finished first in the 100 with a time of 14.7, while teammate Chris Roulier outdistanced the field in the 300 with a time of 38.53.

Banning’s Chris Manley finished first in the 800 in 1:54.33

Narbonne’s Tasha Turner finished second with a 14.4 in the 100-meter low hurdles.
