UCSD’s Quigley Wins Discus for 2nd National Title

UC San Diego’s Shannon Quigley won her second NCAA Division III track and field title at the national championships in Naperville, Ill., taking the women’s discus with a throw of 146-feet-8. Quigley, who won the shotput on Friday, became the meet’s only double winner.

Amber Lausted of Wisconsin-Eau Claire took the lead on her fifth throw of 144-11, but Quigley regained it on her own fifth throw. Neither improved on their sixth.

UCSD’s Rachel Beerman finished fifth and reached All-American status with her personal best throw of 139-7.

In the women’s 100, the Tritons’ Andrea Kouremetis finished seventh in 12.90 and gained All-American status.

UCSD tied for fourth--its best finish--with New York’s Cortland State. Christopher Newport (Va.) won the title.

Point Loma Nazarene’s Dan Raatjes won the men’s high jump at the NAIA national track and field championships at Azusa Pacific with a jump of 6-11 1/2 inches.

Point Loma’s Annette Ronnerman finished last in the final of the women’s 800 meters.

Azusa Pacific won the men’s team title for the seventh consecutive year. The Crusaders finished 11th. Prairie View A&M; won the women’s title.

PLNC’s Peter Stahl, Kristen Anderson, Peter Johansson and Raatjes were named Academic All-Americans.

RUGBY

The Pacific Coast Grizzlies, with players from the Old Mission Beach Athletic Club, defeated the Midwest Thunderbirds, 31-7, in the opening round of the Steinlager National All-Star Championships at Ocean Beach’s Robb Field. The Western Mustangs defeated USA Rugby East, 18-12, in another round-robin match.

In junior competition, USA Rugby East and the Western Mustangs tied, 13-13, and the Midwest Thunderbirds defeated the Pacific Coast Grizzlies, 23-19.

Players from the tournament, which continues today at 9 a.m. and concludes Monday, will be named to the U.S. national team.

GOLF

U.S. International University’s Allison Shapcott finished tied for 17th at the NCAA championships at Stanford.

Shapcott shot a final 79 for a four-round total of 303. Pat Hurst of San Jose State--the team champion--was the individual winner (292). UCLA freshman Christy Erb of Bonita and USDHS finished tied for 32nd with a 311.
