Apparent Fall From 2nd Story Kills Texan Visiting Newport Beach
A 24-year-old Texas man was fatally injured Saturday when he apparently fell off a second-story balcony while visiting friends in Newport Beach.
Cleon Lee Warren, of Austin, had been visiting friends at a residence in the 1700 block of West Balboa Avenue about 3 a.m. when he went onto the balcony to smoke a cigarette, Newport Beach Sgt. Gene Senecal said.
When Warren had not returned after several minutes, someone went onto the balcony to look for him but saw him unconscious on the pavement, 18 feet below, Senecal said.
Warren was taken to Hoag Hospital where he died of his injuries at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
Senecal said police are investigating the death as an accident. It is still not known how Warren fell off the balcony, he said.
Coroner’s officials said an autopsy is scheduled today.
