Fullerton’s Bailey Picked by the Pirates

Fullerton College’s Rob Bailey heads a list of Orange County college players taken so far in baseball’s amateur draft.

Bailey, a sophomore who played shortstop and center field for Fullerton, was taken in the second round by the Pittsburg Pirates. He has also signed to attend the University of Texas.

Cypress College, which won the Orange Empire Conference this season, has had three sophomores drafted. Outfielder Jason Friedman was picked in the eighth round by the Boston Red Sox. Freidman signed to play at Cal State Fullerton earlier this season.

Pitcher Rich Lodding was taken by the Seattle Mariners in the 16th round, and pitcher Dennis Burbank was picked in the 10th round by the Dodgers. Lodding has signed with Pepperdine; Burbank with Oklahoma State.

Sophomore Craig Paquette, who played third base and shortstop for Golden West, was chosen by the Oakland Athletics in the ninth round. He has also signed with Cal State Fullerton.

Marty Neff, a freshman outfielder from Rancho Santiago, was taken by the Philadelphia Phillies, but the round isn’t known.

Two former Cypress players were also drafted--Trevor Hoffman of Arizona and Ken Briggs of Chapman. Hoffman, a senior shortstop was taken by the Cincinnati Reds. Briggs, a junior who played the infield and caught, was picked by the Minnesota Twins.
