High-Voltage Power Lines Snap, Start Fires
Firefighters were struggling Thursday night to control several grass and brush fires that started when two high-voltage power lines apparently snapped and fell to the ground in Santa Clarita, the Los Angeles County Fire Department reported.
The fires, which were burning in an area of about five acres, started about 9:45 p.m. at a Southern California Edison substation on Magic Mountain Parkway east of the Golden State Freeway, Firefighter Bob Goldman said.
Seven fire companies were trying to keep the flames away from a motel and golf course, about two blocks away, Goldman said.
It was not immediately known what caused the 16,000-volt power lines to fall, Goldman said.
An Edison spokesman said he knew of no power outages caused by the flames.
