El Dorado Pitchers Janicki, Hassel Are Selected

Pitchers Pete Janicki and Jay Hassel of El Dorado High School were taken in baseball’s amateur draft, it was announced Thursday.

Janicki, a right-hander, was taken by the Boston Red Sox in the ninth round. He was 8-1 this season including a three-hit, 2-0 shutout over Millikan in the 5-A Southern Section championship game at Dodger Stadium Saturday. He also has signed to attend UCLA in the fall.

Jay Hassel, also a right-hander, was taken in the 26th round by the Kansas City Royals. He was 4-1 this season. If he does not sign, he likely would attend a community college.

A number of other county players also were taken in later rounds of the draft.

Bobby Jones, a Cal State Fullerton outfielder, was drafted by the Angels. Troy Kopp, a first baseman and pitcher at Mission Viejo High School, was drafted by the Montreal Expos. He already has signed a football scholarship with University of Pacific.

Two former Cypress College pitchers also were drafted. David Rice of Cal Poly Pomona was drafted by the Angels and Bob Blankenship of Sacramento State was picked by the Cincinnati Reds.
