Burnham Bids for TAC Junior Title

Angela Burnham of Rio Mesa High and Walt Stewart of Cal State Northridge head a list of Valley-area track and field athletes scheduled to compete in various meets this weekend.

Burnham, who won her second consecutive state titles in the 100 and 200 meters in last week’s championships at Cerritos College in Norwalk, will compete in The Athletics Congress junior championships at Ohio State today and Sunday.

Campbell Hall junior Crissy Mills, who won her second consecutive state title in the high jump last week, will compete in her specialty today and CSUN freshman Garrett Noel will throw in the men’s javelin competition Sunday in the same meet.

Stewart, Darcy Arreola and Lolita Pile of Northridge each are entered in the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational at UCLA today, although Arreola is questionable in the women’s 800 because of a lingering cold.

Stewart, the NCAA Division II champion in the high jump, takes a personal best of 7 feet, 2 1/2 inches into the meet. Pile will compete in the women’s triple jump, where she has a best of 42-0.

In another meet today, Morgan Bateman of Crescenta Valley High and Mike Williamson of Thousand Oaks will run in the Golden West Invitational at Sacramento’s Hughes Stadium.

Bateman is entered in the boys’ 800 and Williamson will run in the 3,000.

Shannon Wiebelhaus of Rio Mesa High has signed a letter of intent to attend Cal State Northridge in the fall.

Wiebelhaus placed seventh in the 300-meter low hurdles in last week’s state championships and has a personal best of 44.32 seconds in the event.

John Bray, a heavyweight from Van Nuys, is one of 11 boxers selected to compete in the USA-USSR Amateur Boxing Dual on June 13 in Orlando, Fla.

It is the second time this year that Bray has been selected to represent the United States in an international competition. Bray decisioned Irish national champion Sean O’Reagan on March 17 during an amateur dual meet against Ireland.

Bray, 18, ranked third by the USA Amateur Boxing Federation (USA-ABF), the national governing body for Olympic-style boxing in the United States, also reached the semifinals of the U. S. Amateur Boxing Championships in March.

Top-seeded Nisie Sie of Van Nuys defeated Tom Muench of Idyllwild, 6-0, 3-6, 6-2, on Friday in the over-45 men’s singles competition in the Westlake Tennis and Swim Club seniors tournament.

In other matches, Jurgan Janson of Westlake Village defeated Alan Drazin of Woodland Hills, 6-4, 6-2; Larry Rundle of Calabasas defeated Barry Savin of Camarillo, 6-3, 6-2; and Ed Rosa of Calabasas defeated Bob Castle of Rancho Mirage, 6-0, 6-1.

In the over-35 men’s division, Pete Austin of Studio City beat Peter Prudhomme of Ventura, 7-6, 7-5; Haig Bedrossian of Northridge defeated Scott Witjas of Encino, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3; Art Santilli of Ventura beat Andrew Stanley of Oxnard, 6-3, 4-1 (retired); and Ron Cornell of Los Angeles beat Gary Mizuno of Thousand Oaks, 6-1, 6-1.
