ALL-GLENDALE BASEBALL TEAM : PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Gregg Zaun

ST. FRANCIS

The Golden Knights’ leader on the field and in the dugout, Zaun batted .475 with 24 runs scored and 32 RBIs. He also had eight doubles and nine steals to earn Del Rey League Player of the Year honors. Zaun, a 5-foot-10, 170-pound senior catcher, was selected in the 17th round of the amateur draft by the Baltimore Orioles.

PITCHER OF THE YEAR Phillip Arreola

FRANKLIN

After posting a 4-5 record last season Arreola, a 5-foot-11, 160-pound senior, improved to 12-1. Depending heavily on his fastball, Arreola struck out 98 batters while walking just 17 and posting a 1.21 earned-run average. He won the City Section 3-A Division quarterfinal, semifinal and championship games to lead Franklin to its first title.

COACH OF THE YEAR Rick Campbell

FRANKLIN

In his ninth season at Franklin, Campbell led the Panthers (18-4, 13-3) to a first-place tie in the Northern Conference and their first City Section 3-A Division championship. Last season, after Campbell sustained an eye injury and missed 2 1/2 months, Franklin finished 10-12 overall and placed fifth in conference play.

FIRST TEAM Sergio Galvez INF FRANKLIN 5-7, 165 Sr. Galvez was the cornerstone of the Panther offense. After batting .493 with 33 RBIs and 32 runs scored, Galvez was named Northeastern League co-Player of the Year. He also hit a team-high eight home runs and added 12 steals.

Chad Infranca INF FRANKLIN 5-9, 165 Sr. Despite nagging ankle and knee problems, Infranca batted .390, had 25 RBIs and scored 27 runs. Infranca, a shortstop who led Franklin with eight triples, was also a two-time All-City football selection at receiver.

Masaaki Yamashita UTL VERDUGO HILLS 5-11, 175 Sr. In addition to posting a 7-5 record and a 2.12 earned-run average Yamashita, a foreign-exchange student from Japan, batted .356 and drove in 21 runs. Those numbers earned him a spot on the All-Northern Conference team.

Scott Gleason P CRES. VALLEY 5-11, 155 Sr. Although Gleason missed three starts at the beginning of the season with a shoulder injury, he came back strong and finished 6-0 in the Pacific League. Gleason (6-4) plans to attend USC or College of the Canyons in the fall.

Victor Ramirez OF CRES. VALLEY 5-7, 165 Sr. Ramirez batted a team-high .353 and also was a defensive mainstay. He finished with 30 hits and 20 runs scored and was an All-Pacific League selection. Ramirez will attend UC Santa Barbara or College of the Canyons in the fall.

Mickey Moreno INF HOOVER 5-11, 175 Jr. The junior infielder batted .476 and scored 23 runs for the Tornadoes to earn selection to the Glendale team for the second consecutive season. Moreno, a first baseman, led Hoover in doubles (9), triples (2) and home runs (4).

Bill Koury UTL LA CANADA 5-10, 190 Sr. Although hobbled with a torn quadriceps that kept him out of four games, Koury batted a team-high .530 and had 22 RBIs. The two-time All-Southern Section selection will attend Claremont McKenna in the fall.

Cesar Aleman INF MARSHALL 5-5, 130 Sr. Despite a lack of size, Aleman hit .429, scored 14 runs and stole 13 bases. A three-year starter for the Barristers, Aleman was named co-Player of the Year in the Northwestern League and was the all-conference shortstop.

Darryl Kanegawa OF MARSHALL 5-7, 165 Sr. In his first season on the varsity, Kanegawa batted .417, scored 14 runs and had 17 RBIs, seven steals and two home runs. Kanegawa, an All-Northern Conference selection, will attend a junior college in the fall.

Joaquin Arballo INF EAGLE ROCK 5-11, 175 Jr. The versatile Arballo was named to the All-Northern Conference second team as a pitcher and also played third base and shortstop. As a leader on a team dominated by underclassmen, Arballo batted .316 and was 3-3 with a save.

Swain Wukelich INF GLENDALE 5-11, 190 Sr. The Dynamiters struggled for much of the season but Wukelich was consistent, batting .300 with 20 hits, two home runs and 21 RBIs. The team’s most valuable player was a first-team All-Pacific League selection.

Mark Loretta INF ST. FRANCIS 6-0, 175 Sr. Loretta, who will attend Northwestern in the fall, batted .420 and drove in a team-high 23 runs. In addition, he had five doubles, three triples and scored 15 runs. Lorretta, a three-year starter, was an All-Del Rey League selection.

Matt Whisenant P LA CANADA 6-2, 190 Sr. A two-time All-Glendale selection, Whisenant was again able to blend solid pitching with powerful batting. The senior left-hander finished 5-5 with a 2.31 ERA. He also hit .431 and drove in 20 runs. Whisenant plans to attend USC.

David Berkey UTL HOOVER 5-8, 155 Sr. The two-time All-Pacific League and Times All-Glendale selection batted .395 with five doubles, two triples and 16 runs batted in. He posted a record of 5-6 as a pitcher, notching two saves and had an ERA of 2.20.
