Johnson, Madsen Decide to Join Baseball Cast at Ventura College

Coach Gary Anglin expected to lure some top high school baseball recruits to Ventura College after the Pirates capped their best season in 15 years by winning the Western State Conference title and advancing to the state playoffs.

Not even Anglin, however, expected his recruiting to go so well so quickly.

Both John Johnson of Channel Islands and Danny Madsen of Newbury Park are expected to play for Anglin next season.

Johnson, who hit .383 with five home runs at Channel Islands, was a low-round draft choice of the Seattle Mariners on June 5 but has opted to attend Ventura, where he expects to play both football and baseball.

Madsen was a low-round choice of the Texas Rangers, but he also plans to attend Ventura.

Johnson, who did not score 700 on the Scholastic Aptitude Test, has been promised a football scholarship to Arizona if he plays football and completes two years at Ventura.
