All-Star Baseball Game to Pit Ventura County Against Westside

Five players from Simi Valley High will lead a team from Ventura County against a team from the Westside in an all-star baseball game today at 2 at UCLA’s Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Pitchers Mike Jenkins and Rich Langford, and infielders Terry Hill, Andy Hodgins and Jesse Anguiano will represent the Pioneers on the Ventura County team, which will be coached by Fillmore’s Tom Ecklund, Moorpark’s Mario Porto, Buena’s Stan Hedegard and Santa Paula’s Mark Magdaleno.

Danny Madsen of Newbury Park, Steve Soliz of Rio Mesa and Derek Tamburro of Westlake are the catchers for the Ventura County team. Pitchers will include Steve Biggs of Camarillo, Jon Rust of Rio Mesa and Rick Pearn of Ventura.

Playing outfield for the Ventura County team will be Chris Grodell of Thousand Oaks, Jason Jones of Royal, Zac Miller of Agoura, Geoff Black of Newbury Park, Ty Hewitt of Buena and Chris Gaston of St. Bonaventure. Infielders include John Johnson of Channel Islands, Tom Lunsford of Buena and Pat Avila of Channel Islands.

Top players for the Westside include pitcher Eric Alexander of University and first baseman Danny Melendez of St. Bernard.
