Chuck Velona, the former longtime general manager at KHJ-TV Channel 9, will head up Sports-Channel Los Angeles, an all-sports service that will replace the Z Channel June 30. Velona, 48, served as Channel 9’s general manager from 1979 until he was let go in May by the Walt Disney Co., which took over the station last December. Velona, named vice president/general manager in Los Angeles, will oversee the local operation of SportsChannel, a division of Rainbow Program Enterprises based in New York. The service will be both subscriber- and advertiser-supported and will cost local cable subscribers between $6 and $9 per month. It will feature Dodgers, Angels and Clippers games formerly carried by Z.
