American Legion Roundup : Cosentino Keys Surge as Woodland Hills East Upends Glendale, 5-2

Rich Cosentino hit a bases-loaded single in the fourth inning to knock in two runs and lead Woodland Hills East to a 5-2 victory over Glendale in a District 20 inter-division game Saturday at Stengel Field in Glendale.

Cosentino’s hit keyed a four-run rally as Woodland Hills East (8-1) won its sixth consecutive game. Jason Shapiro doubled and singled and was Woodland Hills East’s only player with two hits.

Right-hander Chris Brown (4-0) gave up one run and five hits in eight innings of relief to pick up the win. He relieved starter Eric Rothman, a right-hander, in the second after a line drive struck Rothman’s left hand.

In other District 20 games:

Van Nuys-Notre Dame 19, West Hills 5--Chris Prince hit a grand slam in the sixth and had six runs batted in to lead a potent Van Nuys-Notre Dame offense that rocked four West Hills pitchers for 22 hits in an inter-division game at Chaminade High. The game was called after seven innings because of the 10-run rule.

Outfielder Chris Lohman, who signed a letter of intent Saturday to play baseball for UCLA, went four for five and had an RBI for Van Nuys-Notre Dame (3-5). Teammates Chad Ratliff and Anthony Fanara each had two doubles.

Oscar Macias (1-0) struck out six and yielded two walks and seven hits through five innings before being relieved by Eric Vellozzi.

West Hills committed seven errors and four of Van Nuys-Notre Dame’s runs were unearned.

Van Nuys-Notre Dame will play Lancaster in a doubleheader at 11 a.m. today.

Woodland Hills West 11, Sun Valley 2--Ricky Banuelos tripled and Carl McFadden and Jeff Marks each doubled as Woodland Hills West collected 14 hits en route to an inter-division victory at Poly.

Woodland Hills West improved to 10-2 with the win.

Encino-Crespi 11, Lancaster 9--Mark Maurizi hit a bases-loaded triple to lead Encino-Crespi’s come-from-behind inter-division victory at Antelope Valley High.

Encino-Crespi scored six runs on six singles in the fourth but trailed, 8-7, after seven innings. Maurizi’s triple to right-center field in the eighth keyed a four-run rally that lifted Encino-Crespi (6-4) to the victory.

Right-hander Rick Marino (1-1) gave up eight runs, eight hits and struck out seven through seven innings to pick up the win.

North Hollywood 6, Palmdale 3--Harry Marks doubled, singled and had three RBIs and Mark Williams added a run-scoring single for North Hollywood in the inter-division game at Taft.

North Hollywood (5-6) collected six hits.

Valley Encino-Tarzana 16, Studio City 5--Justin Bass had a bases-loaded triple and five hits to lead Valley Encino-Tarzana’s 21-hit attack in the inter-division game at Sylmar. The game was called after eight innings because of the 10-run rule.

Bass, whose three-run triple came in the eighth, had four RBIs on five hits. Marc Seder doubled twice and had three RBIs.

David Grisar threw a three-hitter and struck out nine in going the distance for the win.

DISTRICT 16

Westlake-Agoura 17, Camarillo 6--Mike Lieberthal homered and had four hits and Zac Miller had four hits and five RBIs as Westlake-Agoura collected 20 hits in the game at Camarillo.

Miller had a two-run double in the third and Lieberthal led off the seventh with a solo homer. Todd Preston added five hits and one RBI for Westlake-Agoura (12-1-2).

Right-hander Bob Grandpre (5-0) gave up five runs, 10 hits and struck out six in seven innings to pick up the win.

Chris Borchard homered for Camarillo.

Conejo 6, Royal 5 (10 innings)--Scott Barkman’s sacrifice fly drove in Chris Grodell with the winning run in the top of the 10th inning at Royal.

Grodell, who had three hits, singled to start the ninth and went to third on Bill Hall’s single, setting the stage for Barkman, who had two RBIs.

Trailing, 5-4, Conejo (5-5, 4-5 in district play) tied the score in the eighth on doubles by Grodell and Brian Sturges. Conejo took a 4-0 lead in the first when the first five batters produced three singles and two doubles. But Royal scored a run in the second and four in the third to regain the lead.
