76th Assembly District : 11 Candidates Seek Seat Held by Bradley

From a Times Staff Writer

Eleven people have entered the race to fill the 76th Assembly District seat held by the late Bill Bradley.

The candidates for the seat, which covers northeastern San Diego County and parts of southern Riverside County, include a Poway City Council member, a San Diego police lieutenant and a legislative aide to state Sen. William Craven (R-Oceanside). The list also includes a well-known atheist activist and a retiree who is involved in the controversy over the name of the new San Diego Convention Center.

The candidates are:

Linda Brannon, deputy mayor of Poway, a businesswoman and a Republican; San Diego Police Lt. Bill Hoover of Escondido, a Republican; Dennis Koolhaas of Escondido, a legislative assistant for Craven and a Republican; Stephen B. Thorne, an Escondido mental health worker and a leader of the San Diego chapter of the American Atheists, a Democrat, and Ray Foster of Spring Valley, a Republican retiree active in seniors’ rights and a member of the Citizens to Keep the Name San Diego Convention Center, which lobbied to keep the center from being named after the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Other candidates are Jeannine Correia of Poway, a Democrat and an instructor for the developmentally disabled; Bill Holmes of Escondido, an engineer and a member of the Libertarian party; Patricia Rae Hunter of Bonita, a registered nurse and businesswoman, a Republican; Dick Lyles, a Poway businessman and a Republican; Laurie Holt Pfeiler of Escondido, an accountant and a Republican, and Glenn D. Richardson, a Republican from Rancho California in Riverside County, who wrote on his application for candidacy that he is chairman of the governor’s commission.

A spokeswoman for the Riverside County Registrar of Voters said Richardson offered no further information about his occupation, and said the secretary of state may decide not to allow Richardson’s chosen designation on the ballot. Richardson was unavailable for comment Monday.

The candidates are vying to replace Bradley, who died June 1 after a four-year struggle with cancer.

A special primary is scheduled for Aug. 8, and if no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote in the primary, a general election will be held Oct. 3.
