Hart’s Walker Accepts UCLA Assistant Post

Pam Walker, who guided the Hart High girls’ basketball team to the Southern Section 5-A Division title and the state playoff quarterfinals last season, has been hired as a part-time assistant women’s coach at UCLA.

Walker, 26, who graduated from UCLA in 1985, will start Sept. 1.

“She has proven herself to be a winner and will be a valuable asset to our staff,” UCLA Coach Billie Moore said.

Before taking over at Hart four years ago, Walker coached at St. Bernard High in Playa del Rey and at Van Nuys High.

A replacement for Cleveland High basketball Coach Bob Braswell may be announced as early as today.

Cleveland Principal Ida Mae Windham said that she has almost finished interviewing candidates and expects to reach a decision this afternoon or Friday.

Braswell, 27, who twice led Cleveland to the City Section 4-A Division championship game in his four-year tenure, was hired as an assistant coach at Cal State Long Beach two weeks ago.

John Tomac of Chatsworth finished 11th in the Washington Trust Cycling Classic, which concluded Sunday in Spokane, Wash.

Tomac completed the the five-day, 377-mile race in 14 hours, 47 minutes, 8 seconds, 2:11 behind overall winner Alexi Grewal. Tomac was fourth in the final stage, a 60-kilometer criterium through downtown Spokane. He was timed in 1 hour, 2 minutes, the same as stage winner Peter Gylling, a native of Denmark who now resides in Santa Ana.

Barbara Jordan, a three-time Division II All-American softball player from Cal State Northridge, has been added to the Lady Matador coaching staff, Coach Gary Torgeson said Wednesday.

Jordan, who completed her playing eligibility in 1987 after helping CSUN win three national championships, still holds several school records for offense. She replaces Lori Shelly, a former teammate, who left the squad to become head coach at St. Bernard High.

Twelve high school basketball teams are expected to compete in the Kingsmen Classic beginning Friday at Cal Lutheran.

Thousand Oaks is the only local high school competing in the three-day tournament. The championship game will be played Sunday. An all-tournament team will be announced after Sunday’s game.

Work on a 3,000-square-foot addition to the Cal State Northridge athletic offices began this week.

The project is scheduled for completion in September at a cost of $300,000.
