Firefighters today battled to control a wildfire in San Diego County that blackened 800 acres and cut off phone service to the small communities of Potrero and Campo.

“It’s still very out of control,” said California Department of Forestry spokeswoman Dolores Fremter. “What’s giving us the most difficulty is that they can only reach the fire with hand crews because the terrain is very steep.”

In Riverside County, more than 100 firefighters worked through the night to form a line around a fire that burned 1,302 acres of brush and vegetation. The fire, in Temescal Canyon between lakes Mathews and Elsinore, was ignited about noon Wednesday by a spark from a truck-trailer loaded with cars that struck a rock.
