Man, 75, Found Dead on Burning Mattress
A75-year-old man was found dead Tuesday morning lying on a smoldering mattress in the bedroom of a Van Nuys house, the Los Angeles Police Department reported.
Michael Krofina died in a house he shared with his brother at 14827 Victory Blvd., Detective Phil Morritt said. The brother noticed smoke coming from the bedroom and called the Fire Department about 7:30 a.m., Fire Capt. Mike Sauber said.
Firefighters discovered Krofina’s body after extinguishing the smoldering mattress, Sauber said.
There was no other fire damage, he said. Los Angeles Fire Department arson inspectors were investigating the source of the fire.
The cause of death will not be determined until an autopsy is completed this week, a coroner’s investigator said.
