SportsScope : Mt. SAC Players Sign With Professional Baseball Teams

Three Mt. San Antonio College players have signed contracts after being selected in the major league baseball draft in June.

Corey Kapano, who signed with the California Angels, batted .391 and led the Mounties with 12 home runs and a school-record 62 runs batted in. The first-team All-South Coast Conference selection was a star at Azusa and Diamond Bar high schools.

Catcher Glen Raasch, who signed with the Seattle Mariners, was among Mt. SAC leaders with eight home runs and a .303 batting average and was a second-team all-conference selection.

Pitcher Scott Robles, signed by the Minnesota Twins, had a 6-2 record and a 2.64 earned-run average in 18 appearances.

Four other former Mt. SAC players have signed with pro teams: outfielder Doug Twitty, Oakland Athletics; pitchers Dan DeVille of Cal State Fullerton and Rick Davis of Cal State Dominguez Hills, both by the San Diego Padres, and catcher-third baseman Steve Vondran, Cincinnati Reds.

Practice has started for the 10th annual National Football Foundation Hall of Fame all-star football game at 8 p.m. July 21 at Citrus College in Glendora.

The game matches many of the top graduated high school seniors in the San Gabriel Valley. Proceeds will aid the foundation’s scholar-athlete fund.

The East team, coached by David Merrill from Wilson of Hacienda Heights, is training daily at Citrus. The West, coached by Rosemead’s Jim Hall, is practicing at Rosemead High.
