Fresno State football coaches and teammates of William Howard Jr. held a vigil for the player at Valley Medical Center in Fresno.
Howard, who lost a leg after being shot with a high-powered rifle Tuesday, has been listed in critical condition. He regained consciousness Friday.
Players were given donor recruitment posters to distribute, and the Fresno State athletic department is recruiting athletes to give blood.
Howard, a defensive end who won Big West Conference honorable mention honors last season, has used 45 pints of blood, according to Leslie Blore of the Central Valley Blood Bank. The average person’s body contains eight to 10 pints of blood.
