Top USAC Midget Drivers to Return to Ventura Raceway

The United States Auto Club’s full midgets and three-quarter midgets will return to Ventura Raceway with a full program of open-wheel racing Saturday night at 7.

Some of the top drivers on the California Racing Assn. circuit will be making their third appearance at the one-fifth mile dirt oval this season.

Heading up the full midget field will be points leader Robby Flock of the City of Industry, who is coming off a main event victory last Sunday at Ascot. Flock also set a new track record in May, turning the one-fifth mile in 13.199 seconds.

In hot pursuit of Flock will be last year’s points champion, Sleepy Tripp of Costa Mesa; Tommy Astone of Fresno; P. J. Jones of Rolling Hills, son of Parnelli Jones; Wally Pankratz of Yorba Linda and A. J. Johnson of Paramount, who won the first race of the USAC midget series at Ventura this season.

Ventura County drivers will include Rick Taylor and Terry Farrar of Ojai, Dennis Hart of Ventura, and Larry Derwin of Oxnard.

Three-quarter midget action features a smaller downsized car with slightly less horsepower than the full midgets but equally as quick around the track. Among the the pack will be the Simi Valley brother duo of Rob and Scott Hansen, Dale Harwood of Oxnard, and George Ito of Ventura.
