Tim Mayotte, seeded No. 1, survived early serving problems to defeat John Ross, 7-6, 6-2, and seventh-seeded Derrick Rostagno of Brentwood outlasted Philip Johnson, 7-6, 7-5, Tuesday to move into the third round of the Sovran Bank Classic.

Mayotte, down 4-5 in the first set after suffering two double faults in one game, recovered to even the score by breaking Ross’ serve and then raced through the tiebreaker, 7-3.

Paul Annacone, seeded sixth, ousted Canada’s Doug Burke 7-5, 6-3, and Paul Chamberlin and Todd Witsken had straight-set victories to advance in the $297,500 tournament.
