Nomads Win, Advance to Final in Soccer Tournament

The San Diego Nomads defeated the Greensboro (N.C.) Buccaneers, 2-1, Thursday to advance to the 19-and-under championship of the McGuire Cup soccer tournament in Long Island, N.Y.

With just under two minutes left in the match, Chris Morgan took Steve Sigafosse’s crossing pass from the right wing and scored from six yards out to give the Nomads the semifinal victory.

After Greensboro scored two minutes into the match, the Nomads tied it on a header by Michael Demko from a free kick by Alex Streicek 16 minutes later.

The Nomads will face Southern Ohio, which defeated Virginia Vista Force on penalty kicks in the other semifinal.

GOLF

Leta Lindley of Carlsbad and Kristyl Sunderman of El Cajon were both defeated in the third round of match play at the U.S. Golf Assn. Girls’ Junior Championships at Southern Pines, N.C.

Lindley was defeated, 3 and 2, by Nicole Horner of Hawaii, the runner-up in last week’s Optimist Junior World Championship at Torrey Pines. Sunderman lost to Marian Sison of Virginia, 3 and 1.

Brandie Burton of Rialto, the Junior World champion, defeated Horner, 7 and 5, in the fourth round and qualified for today’s semifinals.

CYCLING

Defending national sprint champion and Olympian Ken Carpenter of La Mesa had the fastest qualifying time of 11.035 seconds in the first round of the U.S. Track Cycling Nationals in Redmond, Wash.

BASEBALL

Four teams from San Diego County will play in the eight-team 13-year-old division today at noon at Pacific Beach’s Mission Bay Youth Field in conjunction with the California Games.

The San Diego Stars, North County Western, North County Eastern and El Cajon will play against teams from Los Angeles, Orange County, San Francisco and Nevada.

The tournament continues Saturday with a Sunday championship scheduled for 2:30 p.m. The champion earns a spot in the Continental World Series Aug. 10 at Omaha, Neb.

RUGBY

The ninth San Diego/Coronado R.F.C. Seven-a-Side tournament will be held Saturday at 8 a.m. at Chula Vista High School. Twelve teams will compete in the championship division, with the winner advancing in the Pacific Coast region of national championship tournament play.
