Steffi Graf, playing her first match since winning Wimbledon, trounced Rene Simpson of Canada, 6-0, 6-0, Monday night in the opening round of the $200,000 Great American Bank tournament at San Diego.

Graf, the world’s top-ranked women’s player, needed just 41 minutes to finish off Simpson.

In an upset, Angelica Gavaldon, a 15-year-old junior to be from Coronado, defeated Wimbledon quarterfinalist Rosalyn Fairbank of South Africa, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.

In other matches, Betsy Nagelsen downed Liz Smylie of Australia, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3; Robin White upset third-seeded Susan Sloane, 7-5, 6-3; No. 7 Claudia Kohde-Kilsch of West Germany beat Elise Burgin, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5, and Isabelle Demongeot of France defeated Sara Gomer of Britain, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1.

Tim Mayotte rallied to beat Brad Gilbert, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, in the rain-delayed final of the $297,500 Sovran Bank tournament at Washington.

The second-seeded Gilbert held a 6-3, 1-1 lead Sunday night when rain suspended the match, which was previously been halted three times due to showers.

Playing in a slight mist Monday afternoon, the top-seeded Mayotte registered a crucial break in the 11th game of the final set before holding serve at 15 for the victory.

Michael Chang, playing his first match since Wimbledon, defeated Pete Sampras, 6-4, 6-4, in the $602,500 Volvo International at Stratton Mountain, Vt.

In other matches, fourth-seeded Kevin Curren defeated Dan Goldberg, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4; ninth-seeded Jim Courier beat Jimmy Brown, 6-3, 7-5; sixth-seeded Jay Berger beat Jeff Tarango, 6-3, 6-7 (7-4), 6-2; No. 14 Jim Pugh beat Al Parker, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5, and No. 16 Scott Davis routed Donni Leaycraft, 6-1, 6-0.
