A fire in the Cleveland National Forest near the Riverside County line continued out of control Wednesday night and has now blackened more than 9,100 acres, fire officials said.

Costs of fighting the blaze, which is believed to have been ignited Saturday by someone target shooting, were estimated at $1.6 million, U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Audrey Hagen said.

Columns of smoke were visible in northern San Diego County, where the fire has charred about a 2-mile strip, Hagen said.

About 1,370 firefighters were battling the blaze, which was burning in a southeasterly direction, Hagen said. Five helicopters and six air tankers were bombarding the flames with water and chemical retardants, she said.

One firefighter suffered a broken collarbone Wednesday when he was struck by a rolling rock, Hagen said. He was taken by helicopter to a local hospital, Hagen said. Nine other firefighters have suffered minor injuries.

A house, mobile home and trailer in Riverside County have been lost to the flames, Hagen said.
