THE SIDELINES : Memphis State on NCAA Probation

MEMPHIS, Tenn. —
The NCAA placed Memphis State University’s football program on three years’ probation today because a player was overpaid for a summer job and was advised by his coach to lie about it.
In a notice to the university, the infractions committee of the NCAA said Memphis State’s voluntary decision to replace the coach and suspend the player reduced the penalties imposed.
