A Costa Mesa man suffered severe bites when he was attacked by a pit bull while walking his own dog, authorities said.

Dale Worley, 28, sustained deep cuts to his nose, lip, right hand and shoulder and was treated at College Hospital Costa Mesa. Worley’s dog, an Alaskan husky, suffered a broken leg and cuts and was taken to Bayshore Animal Hospital Inc. in Costa Mesa.

The pit bull also suffered injuries in the attack and was treated at the animal hospital, police said.

The incident occurred about 11:15 a.m. while Worley was walking his dog in the 100 block of 21st Street. Police said the owner of the pit bull, Thad Alexander, 28, apparently left the gate open to the yard where the animal was kept.

Alexander has not been cited, Costa Mesa Police Sgt. Loren Wyrick said.

“We have no reason to believe he intentionally let the dog loose to assault the victim,” Wyrick said.
