For the first time, Kern County has closed a recreation reservoir to additional boaters to avoid letting a lake get too crowded for safety. Lake Webb, a popular cooling-off spot for Southern Californians, was closed to vehicles towing boats, causing some people to rethink their plans. “I think I will just try it in the middle of the week out here now,” said Lupe Trevino of Wasco, the first person turned back at the lake in Buena Vista Aquatic Recreation Area. The lake west of Bakersfield has been edging closer and closer to capacity for several years, both because so many Southern Californians flock 100 miles and more north to get wet and because of competition between water ski boats and jet skis.
