Dallas Cowboys quarterback Steve Pelluer was at the Atlanta Falcons’ training camp today to meet with Falcons officials and have a physical exam.

The Falcons are pursuing a trade for Pelluer, who arrived in camp Wednesday, but they emphasized that no deal is imminent.

Pelluer, however, said he is eager to be traded.

“I definitely want something to happen pretty quick,” he told the Ft. Worth Star Telegram on Wednesday. “I mean, there’s an exhibition game Saturday, and I still have to learn a new system wherever I’m going to play.”

The Cowboys reportedly want a high draft pick and a wide receiver in return for Pelluer, who started 14 games for them last season, completing 56% of his passes for 3,139 yards with 17 touchdowns and 19 interceptions.

Ken Herock, the Falcons’ director of player personnel, said his team would consider giving Dallas a third-round choice and a player of Atlanta’s choosing.

“I don’t think we’re near on compensation as far dealing with Dallas,” Herock said. “It’s something we’re working on. We hope we can get it done.”

Jim Hay, vice president of the Falcons, was optimistic that a contract agreement could be reached as early as today, the Ft. Worth newspaper reported.

“Their ideas and ours are not that different,” Hay said. “They might be brought together. We’ll meet again. Something might happen then or it might not.”

The Falcons are seeking a veteran backup for starting quarterback Chris Miller.

Also Wednesday, coach Marion Campbell announced that running back James Primus and safety Tim Gordon will not play in Saturday’s preseason opener against the Philadelphia Eagles because of hamstring injuries.
