Participation in high school sports had a positive effect for many minority and female students in certain areas, but did not help them in college or the work force, according to a study released by the Women’s Sports Foundation.

Whites did benefit in their careers from athletic participation, according to the study.

The findings showed gains in academic achievement, leadership aspirations and social involvement for minority and female students.

The report analyzed data from the U.S. Department of Education’s High School and Beyond study. It showed that minority athletes fared better academically.
