Jose Canseco of the Oakland A’s apparently has plea-bargained his way out of a misdemeanor weapons violation and will plead no contest Aug. 31, in exchange for probation and a promise to perform community service, attorney Robert Shapiro of Los Angeles indicated.

Canseco, 24, was arrested by police at the University of California at San Francisco on April 21 after a passer-by noticed a fully loaded, semi-automatic pistol on the floor of his parked Jaguar.

Shapiro said that Canseco was unaware of the state’s gun possession laws and will perform services such as conducting an autograph session at a hospital or taking underprivileged children to a game.
