ON THE SIDELINES : Breland to Defend His Title Oct. 13
Mark Breland will defend his World Boxing Assn. welterweight title against Swiss-based Italian Mauro Martelli here Oct. 13, the organizers said today.
Breland will be making his first defense since undergoing surgery on his left knee to repair a torn cartilage suffered durng a fight in April against Rafael Pineda of Colombia. Breland, gold medalist at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, injured his knee in the second round but retained his crown when the referee stopped the fight in the fifth.
