BASEBALL MISCELLANY : NAMES AND NUMBERS

Share

Emergency Room: Second baseman Billy Bates, the 12th player recalled from Denver by the injury-decimated Milwaukee Brewers this year, was up only a week as a replacement for Jim Gantner when he was lost for the season. He separated a shoulder when he slipped and fell rounding first base on a single. The Brewers have put 15 players on the disabled list this year and still have 10 on it.

Bam or Bust?: Hensley (Bam Bam) Meulens became the 47th player and sixth third baseman to play for the New York Yankees this season after being recalled Tuesday. Bam Bam, 22, has been considered one of the Yankees’ top prospects, but he had 32 errors and 120 strikeouts in his 118 games at Albany and Columbus.

Nothing Gained: Shortstop Felix Fermin of the Cleveland Indians tied a major league record with four sacrifice bunts in Tuesday night’s game against the Seattle Mariners, but it was a wasted accomplishment. None of the runners advanced by Fermin scored.

Power Shortage: The Chicago White Sox can’t expect much punch from their double-play combination of Ozzie Guillen and Scott Fletcher, their recently re-acquired second baseman. Guillen had gone 1,124 at-bats without a homer through Friday. Fletcher’s drought spanned 1,011 at-bats.

A First: No team has had a relief pitcher lead its staff in strikeouts, but Duane Ward and Tom Henke are running 1-2 among Toronto Blue Jay pitchers.
