College Roundup : Northridge Falls in Final to Portland St.

Portland State, the defending Division II national women’s volleyball champion, defeated Cal State Northridge for the second time in a week to win the Portland State tournament Saturday, this time by a score of 15-10, 13-15, 15-13, 15-8.

Kathleen Dixon and Keira Middleton of Northridge were selected to the all-tournament team.

CSUN volleyball--A story in Sunday’s edition stated incorrectly that the Portland State women’s volleyball team won its own tournament after defeating Cal State Northridge in the Portland Tournament. Northridge did lose the match, but it was awarded the tournament championship on the basis of total points won. Northridge, Portland State and Regis (Colo.) College all finished the round-robin tournament with a record of 3-1.

In an earlier match, Northridge defeated Regis State of Colorado, 15-3, 15-5, 15-9.

In other women’s volleyball matches:

Pierce d. Glendale (Ariz.), 15-11--Outside hitter Anna Suarez had six kills and middle blocker Andrea Banducci added five as Pierce won the 12-team Cypress tournament at Cypress College.

MEN’S SOCCER

Occidental 3, Whittier 0--Aran Aleamoni scored three goals to lead the host Tigers in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference soccer match.

Aleamoni scored at the 22:40 and 30:42 marks of the first half and with 14 minutes left in the match.

Will Price assisted Aleamoni on the first and third goals and Jay Caba assisted on the second.

Occidental is 1-3-2 overall and 1-0-2 in SCIAC play. Whittier is 1-2 in the SCIAC.

Cal Lutheran 3, Redlands 0--Casey Pirih, Jesse Gallegos and Larry Gidley scored to boost the host Kingsmen (4-2) to their fourth consecutive nonconference victory.

University of San Diego 2, CSUN 1--The Toreros (2-1) handed the Matadors (3-1-2) their first loss of the season in a Nevada Las Vegas tournament match.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Aztec Invitational: Cal State Northridge, led by an 18th-place finish by Sasha Vujic, placed 11th in the 36-team meet at San Diego’s Balboa Park. CSUN was the highest-finishing Division II team in the field.

Arizona’s Marc Davis won the eight-kilometer race, finishing in 24 minutes, 48 seconds. Vujic finished in 25:56.
