Brea-Sonora Junior Varsity Game Canceled

Friday night’s junior varsity football game between Brea-Olinda and Sonora high schools was canceled by the schools’ principals.

Sonora officials were concerned with crowd control after a fight ended the varsity game on Thursday with 1 minute 8 seconds left. There were five unsportsmanlike conduct penalties called before the fight that ended the game, which Brea-Olinda won, 20-10.

Brea-Olinda co-principal Jean Sullivan said Sonora had asked to cancel the game. Sonora principal Ken Sticher was not available for comment on Friday.

“They called and said they would like to (cancel) the contest,” Sullivan said. “We had no reason to expect difficulty in the junior varsity game.”

Sonora assistant principal Ron Anderson said “there was concern about the unfortunate ending of the game (Thursday).”

Spokesmen for both schools said that they are reviewing tapes of the game before deciding whether to take disciplinary action.
