Huntington Beach Blanks LB Wilson
LONG BEACH — Huntington Beach High School (4-0) scored 21 points in the first quarter, then cruised to a 33-0 victory over Long Beach Wilson in a nonleague game Friday night at Wilson.
Huntington Beach scored on its third play from scrimmage when quarterback Jeff Gibson went deep over the Wilson secondary to find Jacob Kulikoff wide open for a 49-yard touchdown. Kulikoff, in his first start at wide receiver after being converted from defensive back, scored again at the end of the first quarter, when Gibson rolled out and hit him on the left side for a 55-yard touchdown play.
Doug Cunningham scored on a 51-yard run from scrimmage on the first play of the Oilers’ second possession.
Cunningham led Huntington Beach with 119 yards rushing in 12 carries. He also caught a pair of passes for 32 yards, including a 15-yard scoring pass from reserve quarterback Mike Chavira in the third quarter. Kulikoff, with two catches for 104 yards, was Huntington Beach’s leading receiver. Gibson completed six of 11 passes for 134 yards.
Wilson (1-3) gave Huntington Beach a safety in the first quarter when a high snap sailed over punter Jon Brock’s head into the end zone. And in the third quarter, Huntington Beach recovered Denez Blackshire’s fumble on a kick return. Two plays later, Jeff Dunagan plowed through three tacklers down the left side for a 19-yard touchdown run.
