LOCAL : Woman Dies in Wreck Near Laguna
A 43-year-old woman was killed and her husband critically injured when their sports car struck a power pole while racing another car on Pacific Coast Highway north of Laguna Beach, California Highway Patrol officers said today.
Sandra S. Lee of Ontario was pronounced dead at the scene of the 6:26 p.m. accident. Her husband, William R. Lee, 44, was taken to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo where he was listed today in critical condition with multiple injuries.
CHP Officer Ken Daily said the Lees’ red Porsche was traveling north on the highway near the Laguna Beach city limits when William Lee lost control, hit an embankment and smashed into a power pole.
Witnesses told the CHP that the Porsche appeared to have been racing with another sports car before it swerved across the road.
The accident knocked down live power lines across the north lanes of the highway, prompting the CHP to divert traffic through the southbound lanes. A massive traffic tie-up resulted as emergency crews cleared the wreckage and Southern California Edison Co. workers tried to repair the downed lines.
