College Roundup : Laverde Scores Decisive Goal for CSUN, 2-1

Midfielder German Laverde scored an unassisted goal with two minutes remaining Wednesday to lift visiting Cal State Northridge to a 2-1 win over Cal Poly Pomona in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. match.
Laverde, a sophomore making his first start for the Matadors, stole the ball from a defender, dribbled to the left of the goal and fired a 23-yard shot with his left foot for his second goal of the season.
“It was a rocket shot,” Northridge Coach Marwan Ass’ad said. “German is known for having a very strong shot. He’s really playing well.”
Northridge (5-2-2, 2-0 in conference play) took a 1-0 lead 30 minutes into the match when Jim Hofferber scored his team-high fifth goal on an assist from Scott Piri.
Pomona (0-2 in conference play) evened the score with 20 minutes left in the match.
In another men’s soccer match:
Claremont 2, Occidental 1 (OT)--Jay Caba scored Occidental’s lone goal in the second half of a double-overtime loss in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Assn. match at Occidental.
Occidental is 3-5-2, 2-1-2.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Pomona-Pitzer 3, Occidental 2--Danya Dumbrill scored in the 47th minute for Pomona-Pitzer the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Assn. match at Pomona-Pitzer.
Jos Bergman scored two goals for Occidental (1-9-1, 1-2). Laurie Carvajal and Jennifer Rosen also scored for Pomona-Pitzer.
USIU 2, Cal Lutheran 0--Vanessa Martin took four shots and Danielle Deyarmand added two, but the visiting Regals were outshot by USIU, 25-6.
Cal Lutheran goalkeeper Kara Lam registered five saves.
CLU (3-4) trailed, 1-0, at the half before USIU scored at the 61:06 mark to seal the victory.
