It was redemption with a vengeance for Sean Rogers of Ocean View High School Friday.

A week after missing on four field goal attempts, Rogers kicked four against Tustin in Ocean View’s 35-9 nonleague victory in front of 600 at Huntington Beach High School.

If that wasn’t enough, he also intercepted three passes and blocked a conversion attempt. “This is great, especially after last week,” said Rogers, who is a transfer for South Dakota.

Last week, Rogers had opportunity after opportunity in a 9-7 loss to Western.

There would be no repeat performance, though.

Rogers, a senior, made kicks from 27, 46, 32 and 39 yards and was one field goal short of the Orange County record of five set by El Modena’s Tim Hatcher last season.

Rogers appeared to have tied the record late in the fourth quarter, as he kicked a 34-yard field goal. However, the Seahawks accepted a Tustin penalty.

“Last week, I didn’t look at the tee because I was worried where the kicks were going to go,” said Rogers. “Tonight, I kept my head down and focused on the tee. I feel a little bit better about things now.”

After his 27-yarder gave Ocean View (3-2) a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, Rogers set up the first touchdown with a diving interception at the Seahawk 45-yard line.

Quarterback Randy Karliner completed two passes on the scoring drive, including an eight-yard scoring pass to Andrew Wind.

Slot back Ben Cesar injured his neck on the drive after he ran 16 yards for a first down on the Tustin four. Cesar was taken to the hospital, but was released after tests.

It was the first of three touchdown passes for Karliner, who completed nine of 12 passes for 166 yards.

“It seems we’re on one week and off the next,” Ocean View Coach Howard Isom said. “Tonight, the offense showed up.”

As well as the defense, which limited Tustin’s running attack to but 15 yards.

The Tillers (3-2), who turned the ball over six times, didn’t fair much better when they threw the ball. Quarterback Andy Borza completed 15 of 29 passes for 193 yards and one touchdown, but was intercepted four passes.

Tustin pulled close in the third quarter, as Borza hit tight end Chad Smith (six receptions, 95 yards) for a 14-yard touchdown pass. However, Rogers blocked the conversion attempt and the Seahawks maintained a seven-point lead, 16-9.
