THE SIDELINES : Young to Quarterback 49ers
With Joe Montana injured, Steve Young will start at quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday against the New York Jets. If something happens to Young, Steve Bono will be quarterback, Coach George Seifert said.
Montana stretched a ligament in his left knee during the 49ers’ 37-20 victory over New England at Stanford Stadium last Sunday. “My inkling is that the earliest Joe would be ready to go is a couple of weeks from now,” perhaps in the Nov. 6 game against New Orleans, Seifert said.
He also said doctors are considering surgery to help injured safety Jeff Fuller regain the feeling in his right arm. Fuller, injured while tackling New England’s John Stephens, suffered neurological damage that has left his right arm partially paralyzed. He is listed in stable condition at Stanford Hospital.
