PREP ROUNDUP : Newport Harbor Wins in Overtime to Take Sea View Water Polo Title

In a match to decide the Sea View League water polo championship, Kenton Read’s goal with 1 1/2 minutes remaining in sudden-death overtime gave Newport Harbor High School an 8-7 victory over Corona del Mar Thursday at Newport Harbor.

Corona del Mar (24-3 overall, 4-1 in league) and Newport Harbor (15-9, 5-0) did not score in the first three-minute overtime period after trading the lead throughout the match.

Read’s winning goal was his fourth, which led all scorers. Eric Slutzky scored two for the Sailors, who became the only team besides El Dorado to defeat Corona del Mar this season.

Ryan Weir had three goals and Gunnar Gustafson two for the Sea Kings, who had defeated Newport Harbor, 5-3, in the California State Tournament Saturday at Stanford University.

In other Sea View League water polo:

University 10, Tustin 9--Greg Krogen and John Melfi each scored three goals as University (10-12, 3-2) won at Tustin to take third place in the league. Tustin outscored University, 4-1, in the fourth quarter.

In Century League water polo:

Villa Park 9, Foothill 7--Villa Park (21-4, 5-0) led the entire match to win the league championship at Foothill. Gavin Arroyo scored four goals and goalkeeper Kenny Yee had nine saves for the Spartans, who led 3-0 and 8-3 before Foothill (16-10, 4-1) cut the gap. Zac Holder had four goals for Foothill.

In Empire League water polo:

El Dorado 23, Loara 2--Matt MacLear had six goals to lead visiting El Dorado (22-3, 5-0) to its second consecutive league championship and seventh title in the past eight years. Kyle Utsumi had four goals and Jim Leonard three for El Dorado.

Esperanza 10, Los Alamitos 8--Brian Pickler scored four goals to lead Esperanza (21-6, 4-1), which finished second in the league. Los Alamitos finished third. Jeff Fochtman and Mark Campagna each scored two goals for Esperanza. Pickler’s 90 goals this season were the second-most ever by an Esperanza player. For Los Alamitos, Dustin MacDonald had three goals and Jon Wu two.

In Pacific Coast League water polo:

Costa Mesa 17, Woodbridge 13--Corey Delahunt had nine goals and Bret Dieball had four for the Mustangs at Heritage Park in Irvine. Costa Mesa (10-15, 4-1) shares the league title with Orange. Woodbridge, which finished 3-2 in the league, is tied with Laguna Hills.

Orange 21, Trabuco Hills 15--Joel Stewart had 12 goals, leading league co-champion Orange (15-8, 4-1) over Trabuco Hills at Laguna Hills. Clay Kaytis had five goals for Orange.

Laguna Hills 7, Laguna Beach 6 (OT)--Matt Maxson scored with 29 seconds left in overtime for the Hawks (9-10, 3-2) at Laguna Beach. Laguna Beach’s Tommy Linden tied the score with 50 seconds remaining in regulation. Maxson and brothers Jay and Chad Carvin each scored two goals for Laguna Hills.

In Sunset League water polo:

Edison 9, Westminster 6--Brothers Clint and Brent Nichols each scored three goals for the Chargers (12-7, 4-1) at Golden West College. Matt Schacht had 10 saves for Edison, which wrapped up second place in the league.

In Angelus League girls’ tennis:

Two Mater Dei doubles teams met for the league championship with Kathy Donahue and Kim Graham defeating Kim Conter and Tricia Abe, 6-1, 6-2, at the Lakewood Country Club. Mater Dei’s Erica Asmuss won the singles title, defeating Mandy Gomez of Rosary, 6-3, 6-3. All of the finalists will represent the league in the Southern Section individual championships, which begin Nov. 18 at Huntington Beach High. Joyce Cruz of Rosary will be the alternate in singles. In doubles, the alternate will be the Rosary team of Terri La Madrid and Kristie Le Bouf.

In Century League girls’ tennis:

Foothill 14, Santa Ana 4--The Foothill doubles team of Karen Falconer and Jennifer Gin won their sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1, at Santa Ana to raise their overall record to 45-0. The team of Melissa Leupold and Resa Boseker also swept their sets, 6-3, 6-1, 6-3, as Foothill (16-4, 10-0) finished the regular season with 14 consecutive victories.

In South Coast League girls’ tennis:

Dana Hills 10, Capistrano Valley 8--The match started Tuesday, but was postponed because of darkness and finished Wednesday. Visiting Dana Hills (14-1, 8-1) led, 9-8, when the match was postponed with the Dolphins’ No. 2 doubles team of Jamie Fouret and Anna Zaricki needing to finish a 3-3 match. The pair ended up winning, 6-4, to give Dana Hills a tie for the league title. Capistrano Valley slipped to 17-1 overall, 8-1 in the league. Dana Hills’ No. 1 singles player Anne Mall swept her sets, 6-4, 6-1, 6-0, and the Dolphins’ top doubles team of Kelly Lynch and Christine Orcutt swept their sets, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2.
