Serra Cops League Title by Beating Verbum Dei, 40-6

Serra High won its fourth consecutive Camino Real League championship by defeating Verbum Dei, 40-6, on a wet, muddy field at Jackie Robinson Stadium Thursday night.

Serra improved its record to 9-0 overall and 4-0 in league. Verbum Dei fell to 5-4 and 2-1 in league.

Serra erupted for 28 second half points to pull away from the Eagles.

Dennis Gerard ran for a 67-yard touchdown to open the second-half scoring. He led all rushers with 98 yards on 10 carries. Serra defensive back Clayton Lopez ran a 1-yard Verbum Dei punt 31 yards back for another touchdown making the score 28-6 with the ensuing two point conversion and putting the game out of reach for Verbum Dei.

In the first half, Serra took advantage of two fumbled punts by Verbum Dei to score two touchdown and take a 12-6 lead.

Gerald Henry ran 17 yards for a touchdown after Verbumm Dei fumbled a punt at its own 17-yard line.

The Eagles tied the score late in the first quarter when quarterback Tyrone Phillips passed 31 yards down the right sideline to Keith Neal.

Neal’s touchdown tied the score and the Verbum Dei two-point conversion attempt failed.
