Loyola Loses Player Before Game, Then Falls to Australian Team

Loyola Marymount’s day got off to a bad start when point guard Terrell Lowery was taken to the hospital in the morning with abdominal pains.

Things didn’t improve later, when the Lions lost their basketball exhibition to the Australian national team, 117-104, at Gersten Pavilion.

The Lions, who often thrive with three-point shots, had nine Saturday. But the Australians made 14, including six by one-time Seton Hall star Andrew Gaze, who had a game-high 37 points.

Australia led, 67-53, at halftime, and expanded the margin to 18 early in the second half. But they had to hold off Loyola, which closed to 98-92 late in the game.

Hank Gathers led Loyola with 28 points. Jeff Fryer added 25 and Bo Kimble 21.

Lowery remained hospitalized without a diagnosis at game time.
