COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Nicholls Leads CSUN to Win in Volleyball

Nancy Nicholls had 10 kills to lead the Cal State Northridge women’s volleyball team to a 15-2, 16-14, 15-7 win over host Cal State Los Angeles in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. match Tuesday.

Northridge (24-10 overall, 7-3 in conference play) received nine digs from Patty Fitzsimmons and 24 assists from Karen Scholl as the Matadors kept alive hopes of finishing in a four-way tie for first in their conference.

Shelley Swalec added six blocks for the winners.

In another volleyball match:

Cuesta d. Pierce, 14-16, 15-12, 14-16, 15-8, 15-7--In a match that could have catapulted Pierce into a tie for first place, the Brahmas were edged by Western State Conference leader Cuesta.

Anna Suarez had 24 kills to lead Pierce (15-2, 14-2) and Alissa Levisohn added 22 kills. Andrea Banducci chipped in with 14 kills for Pierce, which is almost assured of second place in the conference and an automatic playoff berth.

The match all but seals the conference title for Cuesta (19-2, 16-0), which, like Pierce, has two matches remaining. Pierce has a two-game lead over third-place Santa Barbara.

Men’s Soccer

Moorpark 3, Bakersfield 0--While his teammates provided the necessary offensive punch, goal keeper Dan Madsen recorded six saves and his conference-high ninth shutout in a Western State Conference match at Bakersfield.

Moorpark (10-3-2, 6-1-1), ranked eighth among state junior colleges, began the week tied with Glendale for first place in the conference. Bakersfield fell to 0-7-1 in conference play.

Billy Kranz and Jeff Spach scored before intermission and Sergio Pizano added a second-half goal. “We played team ball today,” Coach Frank Parodi said. “We were moving the ball nicely.”

Women’s Soccer

Moorpark 1, Palomar 1--Barbara Yribe scored Moorpark’s only goal in the first half as the Raiders (11-2-3, 6-2-3) tied host Palomar in a South Coast Conference match.
