HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Unseeded Julian Upsets No. 8 to Reach Quarters

Julian pulled the only upset in the Division III volleyball playoffs Wednesday by ousting No. 8 Midway Baptist, 14-16, 15-10, 15-0, 15-5.

Julian is the only unseeded team to advance to Friday’s quarterfinals but may not last long--it plays No. 1 Christian, which disposed of Santa Fe Christian, 15-3, 15-3, 15-6.

In other games, No. 5 Holtville will go up against No. 4 La Jolla Country Day, No. 3 Calvin Christian will play No. 6 Bishop’s, and No. 2 Parker will meet No. 7 Calipatria.

To advance to the quarters, Parker defeated Coronado, 15-3, 15-1, 15-2; Calvin Christian topped Vincent Memorial, 15-2, 15-6, 15-13; La Jolla Country Day beat Lutheran, 15-4, 15-4, 15-0; Holtville defeated Mountain Empire; Bishop’s got 20 kills from Cassandra Furey to edge Imperial, 12-15, 15-6, 18-16, 15-4, and Calipatria defeated Marian, 15-7, 15-1, 15-5.

Girls’ Tennis

Bonita Vista became the only unseeded 3-A team to advance to the semifinals as it knocked off No. 3 Mt. Carmel, 11-7.

Mt. Carmel managed to win just two of nine doubles matches and no singles matches.

Bonita Vista now goes up against No. 2 Torrey Pines today at 2:30 at Torrey Pines. Torrey Pines advanced on the strength of an 18-0 blowout of Helix.

The other semifinal will match No. 1 Poway against No. 3 Mira Mesa. Poway defeated Serra, 17-1, sweeping all doubles matches and eight of nine singles matches. Mira Mesa advanced by the slimmest of margins. After its match with San Dieguito ended in a 9-9 tie, it was declared the victor on the basis of overall points, 76-73.

In the 2-A, all four top seeds made it into today’s semifinals. No. 1 Bishop’s will face No. 4 USDHS, and No. 3 Our Lady of Peace will go up against No. 4 La Jolla.

Cross-Country

An appeal filed Tuesday by Mt. Carmel, Fallbrook and Poway High Schools to keep San Pasqual in the 1-A division for the upcoming cross-country championships has been upheld by the San Diego Section, according to Commissioner Kendall Webb.

A special committee met Wednesday morning and voted to keep San Pasqual’s boys teams from moving up to the 3-A division and the girls from jumping to the 2-A division for reasons based on enrollment.
