Anaheim’s Defense Dominates Magnolia

Solid defense in the second half was the key for Anaheim High School in its 32-8 victory over Magnolia in an Orange League football game at Western High School Friday night.

Leading Magnolia at halftime, 15-8, Anaheim’s Walter Flores recovered Pat McNeil’s fumble on the first play of the second half at the Magnolia 29. Five plays later, Tony Olivo scored on a 10-yard pass from freshman quarterback Phil Covarrubis .

Four plays following the ensuing kick, Anaheim got the ball back on downs and Joe Macklin scored from the one to make the score, 29-8, with 5:14 left in the third quarter.

Covarrubis, playing in his first varsity game, scored Anaheim’s first touchdown on a one-yard run with 1:22 left in the first quarter. He also completed eight of 12 passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns.

Anaheim finished its season 2-8 overall and 1-4 in league play.
