SOCKERS TONIGHT

Share

Opponent--Dallas Sidekicks, at San Diego Sports Arena, 6:05.

TV--None.

Radio--XTRA (690 AM), XEDG (1550 AM), delayed after Charger game.

Records--Sockers 1-2; Sidekicks 2-0.

Record vs. Opponent--0-1.

Sockers update--The Sockers are more banged up than they were two weeks ago, when the Sidekicks clubbed them in Dallas, 9-3. Forward Damir Haramina won’t play because of a hamstring pull, and forward Zoran Karic might miss the game with a right knee sprain. Midfielder Rod Castro (ankle) is probable, but midfielder Ben Collins (thigh) is still out. Defender George Fernandez has had the flu this past week and might see less duty than usual, making room for rookies Donald Cogsville and Arturo Velazco. Tonight’s game begins an important three-game homestand for the Sockers, who will play St. Louis and Tacoma next Friday and Saturday. “I’m taking it pretty seriously,” Socker Coach Ron Newman said. “You can’t afford to lose the home games and suddenly go on the road trip with a losing streak.” The Sockers lead the series, 18-6.

Sidekicks update--Tatu scored five goals against the Sockers in the opener and appears fully recovered from the season-ending knee injury he suffered in 1987. In the past, the Sockers have always had success shutting him down, but that was before the Sidekicks improved Tatu’s supporting cast. The Sidekicks have won only one of their past 12 games in San Diego. Dallas extended the Sockers to seven games in the semifinals of the playoffs last season, losing, 1-0, in the final game on Branko Segota’s goal.
