10-Year-Old Spectator Killed During Baja Off-Road Race

Larry Roeseler drove his Kawasaki motorcycle across the finish line first early Friday morning in the 22nd annual Presidente SCORE Baja 1000, as a fatal accident marred the off-road race.

Lorenzo Lopez, 10, was killed Thursday night when struck by a racing vehicle near San Quintin, 175 miles south of Ensenada, said Mary Caputo, an official of the tourist and convention bureau of Ensenada.

No further details about the accident were immediately available.

Roeseler, from Irvine, shared the riding duties with Danny LaPorte of Redondo Beach, and Ted Hunnicutt Jr., of Moorpark.

Their time was 17 hours 53 minutes 16.3 seconds over the 1,005-mile course starting at Ensenada and winding down the Baja Peninsula to La Paz.

They averaged 55.46 m.p.h. over the rugged course.

The first vehicle to cross the finish line was a Ford truck driven by Rob Gordon of Irvine, Calif., and co-driver Russ Wernimont of Oceanside, Calif. They were clocked in 18:04:07.9, averaging 54.9 m.p.h.

Second among the motorcycles was Scott Morris and Daryl Folks of Las Vegas, on a KTM, timed in 17:59:33.3.

The second-place vehicle was a Chenowth driven by Mark McMillan and Donald Kenniston of Chula Vista, Calif. They were timed in 19:00:36.1.
